Standard 3.2.2A · operator guide

Food Safety Supervisor requirements: what operators actually need to manage.

The requirement is not simply to hold a certificate. Category 1 and Category 2 businesses covered by Standard 3.2.2A must appoint a certified Food Safety Supervisor before prescribed activities occur and ensure that person is reasonably available to advise and supervise relevant food handlers.

The core requirement

Certification, currency and availability.

  • Certification: the FSS must hold recognised certification from an RTO or an organisation recognised by the relevant regulator.
  • Currency: FSANZ states the certificate must have been obtained within the previous five years.
  • Availability: the FSS must be reasonably available to advise and supervise food handlers undertaking prescribed activities.
  • Operational authority: the person should be positioned to oversee day-to-day food handling, not treated as a name on a compliance register.

What this means operationally

A useful FSMS should make the FSS role visible through assigned responsibilities, overdue checks, failed controls, corrective actions and evidence review. The platform does not replace FSS certification; it helps the supervisor see what requires attention.

Common mistake

Do not confuse having an FSS with supervising food safety.

A current certificate is necessary where the standard applies, but the operational question is whether the supervisor can actually see missed checks, unsafe results and unresolved actions soon enough to intervene.

CSA positioning

CSA FSMS supports the operating and evidence layer around the FSS role. It does not issue Food Safety Supervisor certificates or determine whether a particular business is Category 1 or Category 2.
